The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret At Wood
In the novel "The Handmaid's Tale" is about how some powers has more privilege than the other everyone has been renamed and assigned to different position. Woman are grouped into either handmaid, wife or Martha. The female body has become more important than anything else to guys for example there personality, education, or mind they don't even care.
One of the characters who demise is Ofglen some describes her as walking like a trained pig, true believer and full participant in Gileadean society. In the novel we didn't really get to know much about Ofglen because she killed herself but hanged out with the narrator (Offred)a little before passing on, which another woman will take her spot."I am Ofglen, the woman says. Word perfect. And of course she is,the new one, and Ofglen, wherever she is no longer Ofglen. I never did know her real name. That is how you can get lost,in a sea of names. It wouldn't be easy to find her now." (pg.44) Ofglen is always the first to suggest that they should leave, before anything happens. The narrator feels relief that Ofglen may have died before giving up valuable information about her, then pauses to wonder whether that's even true. "I think of her as a woman for whom every act is done for show, is acting rather than a real act. She does such things to look good, I think."(ch.6 vs.11). Ofglen was set apart from the other woman because she was like the secret rebel and creates a foreshadowing character for others.
When the narrator first meets Ofglen she says "This one is a little nicer than I am. Her eyes are brown, she walks shy, quiet, modest head down, red-gloved hands clasped in front with short little steps like a trained pig on it's hind legs".(ch.2 vs.19). Ofglen tries to lead Offred while friends since Offred didn't realize that mayday stands for resistance. This is the first of many occasions when Offred's memories and love distract her from being in the resistance. Instead of trying to find out what Ofglen is attempting to signal, Offred acts typical she feels something for the mourning wife, but doesn't attempt a real connection. "She's out to make the best of it. But that is what I must look like to her,as well. How can it be otherwise? (ch.6 vs 12). The narrator eventually realize that Ofglen is a potential friend and a member of the resistance. Ofglen wants the Offred to pass on information about the commander to her could mean shes's part of the resistance or she's a government spy.
Although there are different theme of the novel one of it is that handmaid barely get to do anything. Their bodies both enforces their confinement and promises them a kind of freedom.
